CAREER SUCCESS MODEL (CSM) PLAN
Our Army of today and tomorrow offers great opportunities and challenges for the enlisted force.
While the opportunities lie in the eye of the beholder, I know that an individual Career Success
Model (CSM) Plan greatly enhances a soldier's competencies and competitiveness. Each enlisted
soldier benefits with an individual CSM Plan. The administrative tools required are free and easily
available. Each soldier starts with #1 - his/her copy of DA Forms 2A & 2-1. We are
transitioning to a paperless Military Personnel Records Jacket (field 201 file). We will assume
even greater responsibility in ensuring it is accurate and updated. Your Unit Reenlistment NCO
can get you a copy. A visit to your servicing Army Education or Learning Center will provide you
with #2 - the NCO Career Model guide for your individual Primary Military Occupational Specialty
(PMOS). Your Unit Personnel Staff Noncommissioned Officer (PSNCO) can give your #3 - a blank
copy of the Promotion Worksheet. The choice of a mentor is #4. The mentor may be a senior
NCO you respect and trust to review your monthly/quarterly improvements in
competitiveness.
The simplicity of the CSM Plan is the availability of the tools required for self tracking. It is
applicable to both the garrison and field environment. Each soldier is provided the required
administrative tools upon arrival in the new unit. The Promotion Worksheet with military and
civilian education improvements is a great monthly/quarterly counseling topic. A realistic goal is
increasing 25 promotion points each quarter. Soldiers determine if they can achieve the required
promotion cutoff scores earlier. The option of reclassifying into a shortage skill for career
enhancement is better prepared for after an informed self evaluation. The Primary Leadership
Development Course for PFC-SPC and the Basic Leadership Preparatory Course for Sergeants
and above, thru military correspondence, are the building block courses (#5) to improve the skills,
knowledge, and abilities regardless of PMOS. The use of civilian Independent Study Programs
(#6) offers an alternative for a soldier who deploys often or on shift schedules. It is especially
beneficial for the Noncommissioned Officer who can schedule studies not to conflict with the
need to assist junior enlisted soldiers after normal duty hours.
America's Army, entering the 21st Century, is leading our nation in recognizing and rewarding
each American based upon qualifications and character. Maintaining a fit to fight physical
condition, learning how to perform skills of your PMOS, understanding the Big Picture of your
unit's mission, recognizing how you affect the success of your unit, and mentoring your junior
soldiers remain constant throughout our Army's history. Sharing success routes and being
approachable are special traits of an effective leader.
Accept the CSM Plan, tailor it to your schedule, and share it with one Private, Private First Class,
and Specialist in your unit. Affect your career instead of reacting to changing requirements of the
on going reshaping in our Army.
Your assignment here gives you a distinct career enhancement advantage. We have the
advantage of great integration with a proven South Korean ally, inspired leadership of tested
warriors, and the opportunity to perform your PMOS in a tactical environment on the Edge of
Freedom. Each day here in the R.O.K. is another fine day to be part of America's Army. You have
the opportunity to do great things. Continued success!
