Distance Learning Programs DANTES

The DANTES Distance Learning program provides a wide range of nontraditional education programs critical for service members who need alternatives to fulfill degree requirements when classroom courses are unavailable or when work schedules or duty locations do not permit class attendence.
DANTES provides academic courses ranging from high school to graduate level through nearly 100 institutions. Other courses are oriented toward a nondegree-seeking or technically oriented student. Courses are available to personnel in all Military Services. Tuition Assistance is available to all Active Duty, Active Guard/Reserve, and military and civilian personnel of the Army National Guard.

What kind of programs are available?

DANTES Independent Study Program Independent college courses

DANTES External Degree Program AA/AS, BA/BS, and MA/MS Degrees

Programs from Mind Extension University AA/AS, BA/BS, and MA/MS Degrees via cable TV/Satellite/video

Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) Vocational courses, AA/AS, BA/BS, and MA/MS Degrees

What is the purpose of each of these programs?
The DANTES Independent Study Catalog lists more than 6,000 high school, undergraduate and graduate level, and examination preparation correspondence courses that are available from regionally accredited institutions. Subjects range from astronomy to zoology. Transfer credits where needed to complete degree requirements.
The DANTES External Degree Catalog lists programs available from about 40 accredited colleges and universities that have little or no residency requirement for degree completion, making them very useful to service members in achieving their educational goals. The guide lists approximately 100 associate, 225 baccalaureate,100 graduate degree and about 45 credit-bearing certificate programs.
The DANTES Distance and Education Training Council Catalog contains course listings almost 20 from schools accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). The DETC program provides a means of independent study for service members who want to develop skills through technical and nontechnical training.

How are courses delivered?

Affiliated schools use an array of low- to high-tech delivery choices aimed at individual students, worldwide. Although textbooks, pen, paper, and videos continue to be the workhorse of distance learning, advances in technology allow a variety of fast and efficient delivery systems. Many schools allow use e-mail to submit and receive course lessons and papers or to communicate directly with instructors or admission offices. In these classes, assignments can go directly from the student's computer to the instructor's in seconds. Others rely on computers for class interaction among students. Some use the Internet to deliver instruction on line, and several rely on satellite or cable delivery methods.

How do students enroll?
It's really simple!

Students discuss goals with education counselors and the courses needed to meet them. Consult the catalogs described above, as well as specific distance learning catalogs from individual schools.
Verify that the course selected will meet personal needs and will be accepted toward desired degrees, if required.
Complete the DANTES Distance Learning Enrollment form (DANTES 1562/31). This form is available at the Navy Campus/education center.
Students mail the first two copies with the total payment or credit card number to cover tuition, fees, and book costs directly to the school, signed by student and counselor or other certifying official. Air Force Guard and Marines must consult with local education personnel to clarify funding.
The school will send books and lesson materials to the student.
When students complete the final lesson, the school will send a grade report to DANTES and the student. If reimbursement is authorized, student will receive payment either from DANTES or the Service, according to Service's policies.

Costs vary for each course and institution. Fee information is found in the institutional information page within each of the three catalogs.

Customer Service from the Schools Participating schools have agreed to the following:

Provide rapid turnaround time for initial ordering and distributing of course materials and for grading lessons and examination.
Provide transcript services to the Military student in accordance with policies set forth in the supplier's catalog.
